Timeline of AWR's Activities: 1995-1998


February, 1995
Rep. Carolyn Maloney and 20 other members of Congress introduce The Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act.
July, 1995
AWR unveils its Conservation Biology Alternative for grizzly bear restoration to the greater Salmon-Selway-Bitterroot ecosystem.
July 27, 1995
President Clinton signs the Salvage Rider into law. AWR begins its "Logging Without Laws" campaign. AWR Ecosystem Defense director Jennifer Ferenstein originates the idea of a rider repeal bill in Congress. Rep. Elizebeth Furse, D-OR, agrees to sponsor this bill.
January, 1996
AWR publishes it's Special Report # 8, the Conservation Biology Alternative for Grizzly Bear Population Restoration in the Greater Salmon-Selway Region of Central Idaho and Western Montana.
Fall, 1996
AWR releases Special Report Logging Without Laws, including a map of proposed salvage sales in the Northern Rockies. This report helps build opposition to the Salvage Rider.
November 13, 1996
Judge Robert Jones, in a landmark ruling, declares the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service "warranted, but precluded" finding on bull trout is "arbitrary and capricious." Jones orders a new evaluation of the bull trout's legal status.

July, 1997
AWR begins its Great Grizzly Hike, organized by Betsy Gaines, along 300 miles of the Montana-Idaho border, from the Salmon-Selway to the Yellowstone ecosystem.
July 2, 1997
Bitterroot Reintroduction DEIS released and contains the Conservation Biology Alternative as Alternative Number 4. This marks the first time ever that a regional conservation biology plan has been included in a federal EIS.
April 23, 1997
NREPA introduced by Representatives Chris Shays (R-CT) and Carolyn Maloney (D-NY). They were later joined by 70 other members of the U.S. House.
June 11, 1997
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service publishes a Federal Register proposal for listing of the bull trout under the ESA.
October, 1997
Salish & Kootenai Tribes and the Missoula County Commissioners endorse Alternative 4, the Conservation Biology Alternative. These are critical endorsements from elected officials.
Spring, 1998
AWR launches its award-winning new website on the Great Yellowstone Fires of '88.
June 5, 1998
Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt formally announces the listing of the bull trout.
November 23, 1998
AWR is ten years strong!!!
