VIDEO ACTIVISM:
HOW TO GET THE WORD OUT
Video is an excellent tool for sharing important information about
environmental and human rights issues. There’s no set of rules on how it’s done,
but here’s a few suggestions to get you started:
•
Show the video to civic groups and clubs, senior citizens,
churches, conservation groups, clubs, and businesses.
Show the video in classrooms and student union halls, to study
groups, student clubs, and student-led organizations.
Organize public showings in local theaters, community centers,
and artistic venues.
Use the video to lobby groups and government officials to
become actively involved in changing laws and making policies
that protect our environment and human rights.
Present the video at conferences, retreats and gatherings.
Arrange a display and show the video at shopping malls,
special events, and fairs.
Sponsor broadcasts on your local Cable Access TV, public, and
university stations.
Use the video to get media (radio, print, broadcast) interested
in covering the story.
Pass the video and outreach materials along to someone else
when you’re done.
Use your imagination and creativity!
•
Publicize your event using flyers, posters, and leaflets. Dress up in costume,
sing, dance, draw friendly attention to you in areas where people congregate. Place
frequent and timely announcements in local media outlets including newspapers,
radio and TV stations, community newsletters and bulletin boards.
Public video showings are an opportunity for fundraising, empowerment and
advocacy. Pass the hat for donations. Use materials (and have them on hand) that
allow people to take action and be a part of the solution!
for nonprofit educational use, outreach, and advocacy.
