Unbleached or Oxygen-Whitened Recycled Office and Printing Papers

Why choose unbleached or oxygen-whitened papers for office use and printing?

In the paper making process, chlorine and chlorine compounds combine with wood molecules in pulp mill effluent to form organochlorines. This group of compounds range in effect from the harmless and merely unpleasant to those which cause cancer, immune system malfunctions, reproductive disorders, and even mutations. Chlorine based chemicals (including dioxins) persist in the environment and work their way up the food chain.

Most paper mills today still use chlorine based chemicals for bleaching paper, but many also offer chlorine free alternatives to the paper consumer. When you choose these alternatives, you send a powerful message to the mills: you are letting your dollars speak for the health of the environment, fish and wildlife, pulp mill workers and yourself.

Chlorine free alternatives are papers whitened with oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, ozone or enzymes. These papers are available in brightnesses comparable to standard chlorine-based stock. They're competitively priced, and can handle a wide range of printing applications. Papers with recycled content cannot usually be called 'Totally Chlorine Free' because the recycled paper contains remnants of chlorine compounds from their original manufacture.

Any bleaching process introduces harsh chemicals into the environment. Whenever it is appropriate, an unbleached or not de-inked recycled paper product is the most environmentally friendly paper choice.

Eureka 100 (James River, Oregon)

100% recycled, 100% post consumer, acid free, whitened with hydrogen peroxide. 84 brightness, premium copy white. Eureka 35 , Eureka 20 recycled contents of 35% and 20% post consumer waste, respectively.

ReSolve Natural and White (Island Paper Mills, BC, Canada) 50% recycled waste, of which 10% is post consumer content. Alkaline process, archival quality White: 24 lb, 30" x 40" sheets only Natural: requires cutting.

Copy shops and quick printers often carry recycled unbleached products, but you may have to request these papers by brand name. Unity DP, ReSolve Natural and Eureka 100 are all excellent choices for quantity quick print runs.
