CMCR's name comes from the Chinese poet Han-shan, or Cold Mountain, named after the place where he did his retreats. Known as a mystic, a lunatic and a holy man, Han-shan spent most of his life in the mountains where he wrote nature poems on rock in the caves where he meditated. His scribblings were the earliest form of activist art.

In my first thirty years of life
I roamed hundreds and thousands of miles.
Walked by rivers through deep green grass
Entered cities of boiling red dust.
Tried drugs, but couldn't make Immortal;
Read books and wrote poems on history.
Today I'm back at Cold Mountain:
I'll sleep by the creek and purify my ears. -- Han-shan

Our founders chose the name Cold Mountain, Cold Rivers because it offers both unity and diversity, and the comma in our name is there to encourage reflection. CMCR was founded in 1990 with the vision of building an empowered community instilled with a sense of common responsibility for protecting our rights and those of the natural world. Our tactics include grassroots organizing, public education, litigation and video support.

Our organization is run by committed staff and volunteers interested in art, videography, social justice and environmental advocacy. To volunteer, find out more about our current PROJECTS and contact us.
