GRANGEVILLE, Idaho - About 20 environmental activists gathered to demand a halt to road building and logging in the Cove-Mallard area of the Nez Perce National Forest.

The demonstration Wednesday at the forest supervisor's office came at the end of a 10-day, 150-mile walk that started in Moscow, Idaho, and stopped in nine towns along the way.

Environmentalists met with people in each community to talk about their goals for protesting timber sales in the Cove-Mallard, which activists consider a crucial habitat corridor between wilderness areas for elk and other wildlife.

"I don't think people are ready to welcome us with open arms, but they're beginning to understand we're not here to stop logging altogether or interfere with anybody's way of life," said Jake Kreilick, one of the walk organizers.  "We certainly understand there will be disagreements, but we hope we can do that peacefully."
